Disputes and corrections

For companies named in a recall record, and for anyone who finds a mistake.

What we publish

recallsapi.com republishes recall records from US government agencies: CPSC, FDA and NHTSA (USDA FSIS records are planned). Each record keeps the agency's recall number, a link to the agency notice (url), a link to the machine-readable source we read (source_url) and the date we last saw the record change (as_of). We do not add our own findings about a company or a product.

Two kinds of problems

A mistake we made

We process each record: we extract identifiers such as UPCs, model numbers, NDCs and lot codes, split out firm and product names, and match records to products. That processing can go wrong, for example a model number read from the wrong part of the text, a firm attached to the wrong record, a record that no longer matches the agency's current version, or a match that should not exist. These are our errors, and we correct them quickly once confirmed. The corrected record's as_of date changes when the fix lands.

A disagreement with the recall itself

If you dispute whether a recall should exist, its scope, the hazard described or the products listed, that is a question for the agency that published it. We cannot change the facts of a government record. Changes the agency publishes reach recallsapi.com through the daily update; if our copy differs from the agency's current version, tell us and we will refresh it.

How to ask for a correction

Email hello@recallsapi.com with the subject "Record correction" and:

  1. The recall id (for example fda-H-1339-2026) or the API request that returned it.
  2. The field that is wrong and what it should say.
  3. The source that shows it, ideally the agency notice.
  4. How to reach you.

We reply by email. If the error is ours we fix it and tell you; if the question is about the recall itself we say so and point you to the agency.

About matches in sellers' catalogs

Sellers use recallsapi.com to compare their own products with recall records. A match carries a confidence level (exact, strong or possible) and the reasons for it, and sellers are told to confirm every match against the agency notice. A match is not a statement by recallsapi.com that a company's product is unsafe. If you believe our matching logic is producing wrong matches for your products, tell us: that is a matching error we want to fix.
